FTC is considered to be an intermediate program for FIRST, bridging the gap between FLL and FRC for students who are excited and enthusiastic about robotics but cannot be part of an FRC team, and also as an excellent training tool for new FRC team members. It is an affordable and less time-consuming alternative or addition to FRC. Teams are limited to 10 members, allowing each team member to have a participative role on the team.

In Virginia, the maiden FTC event was held at a middle school in Farmville with 29 teams. The following year, VA FTC partnered with the University of Virginia and held an event with 47 teams. Through competing in Virginia and in other events, a total of 9 Virginia teams earned spots and participated in the World Championship in Atlanta. This year, there are more than 60 registered teams in the state, representing 7% of the number of teams across the U.S. Despite all of the changes the program has gone through in its 3 short years, the growth is phenomenal! There is nothing quite as satisfying as watching a program like this take root and grow.
